The UN member states have agreed to eight international development goals that have to be achieved by 2015. These goals are named Millennium Development Goals. Each goal tackles a particular problem. For CHOICE the following goals are of particular interest:
Millennium Development Goal 3
Promote gender equality and empower women.
- As many girls as boys are enrolled in primary and secondary education by 2005.
- Both men and women have the same rights by 2015.
Millennium Development Goal 5
Improve maternal health, including universal access to reproductive health care
- A maternal mortality reduction of 75% by 2015.
- Women have access to reproductive health care by 2015.
Millennium Development Goal 6
Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
- Access for everyone, if needed, to a HIV/AIDS treatment by 2010.
- A stop and reduction of the spreading of HIV/AIDS by 2015.
- A stop and reduction of the spreading of malaria and other serious diseases by 2015.
