Last week the Dutch Minister Marja Van Bijsterveldt (Education, Culture, and Science) announced that she will finally execute a proposal that was submitted to the parliament in 2009. The proposal, submitted in 2009 by Alexander Pechtold, concerned the lack of attention to sexual diversity in Dutch schools. Implementing the proposal in question means that sexuality and sexual diversity will be added to the core aims for elementary and secondary education. Schools will have to take these core aims into account when putting together their curriculum, which means that in the future every Dutch pupil will learn about sexuality and sexual diversity. This is an awesome accomplishment!
CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality sent a letter to Minister van Bijsterveld at the beginning of October to urge her to include sexuality and sexual diversity in the core aims for education, together with several other Dutch NGOs working in our field (EduDivers, MOVISIE, Partnership Aanpak Seksueel Geweld, RutgersWPF, Schorer, Soa AIDS Nederland en Stichting PANN).

De Kamer,
gehoord de beraadslaging,
constaterende, dat gebleken is dat een groot deel van de scholen in het primair en voortgezet onderwijs onvoldoende aandacht schenkt aan seksualiteit en seksuele diversiteit;
overwegende, dat de bestaande kerndoelen rond dit onderwerp te veel onduidelijkheid scheppen;
overwegende, dat aandacht in het onderwijs voor seksualiteit en seksuele diversiteit van groot belang is voor seksuele weerbaarheid, een veilig schoolklimaat, tolerantie en acceptatie van homoseksualiteit;
verzoekt de regering de kerndoelen 38 en 43 in deze richting te moderniseren en de Kamer hierover in het voorjaar te informeren, en gaat over tot de orde van de dag.
