Why support our runners during the race? CHOICE is a youth-led organization that promotes the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of young people worldwide. CHOICE advocates for the rights and freedom of all young people in the world to make personal decisions concerning these issues. This means, for example, that we think that young people have to be able to make free and informed choices about issues such as whether or not to have children, whether to delay or completely abstain from pregnancy, or choosing their partner, but also that young people have the right to correct information and access to contraceptives and health care.
Almost half of the world's population is under the age of 25 - these are all young people who should have the right to make their own choices about their sexuality! This is why CHOICE supports youth organizations worldwide in their capacity building, and why CHOICE members advocate at the United Nations for the SRHR of young people.
What will we do with the proceeds?
Here are the projects which we support with the money raised during the Heroes’ Race The Hague 2012: CHOICE is supporting the following projects with the money raised during the Heldenrace. We aim to achieve all our fundraising goals by raising as much money we can! We identified four projects which we aim to achieve. Each of them has a budget of EUR 5,000,-. Here they are:
Starting with project one: EUR 5000,- for YouAct!
YouAct: Fostering youth leadership in Europe
Young people’s rights are under pressure in Europe. European youth lack access to health services and face discrimination based on their sexuality. Our partner YouAct advocates for youth rights in Europe! With EUR 5,000,- YouAct members from all over Europe can assemble to strategize, strengthen youth leadership in Europe and stand up for young people’s rights.
Project two: EUR 5000,- for YECE!
YECE: Ending early forced marriages in Malawi
In Malawi, 50% of young people get married before they are 18 years old. Many of them are forced into marriage. The results are devastating: young girls are taken out of school and denied their right to education. Moreover, they run serious health risks because they are exposed to early pregnancies and the risk of HIV/aids. Our partner YECE works to end early marriages by influencing national policy and effecting change on the ground. Their community based approach has proven to achieve concrete results: YECE has so far reached a total of 200 local community leaders, 2000 people in the community and 100 government officials at district level with messages on effects of forced marriages. In order to reach out to communities, YECE needs transport. For EUR 5,000 YECE can obtain a car to travel around the country and implement their community program. Every girl counts!
Project three: EUR 5000,- for the Youth do it campaign!
YOU(TH) DO IT: Claim your rights!
The YOU(TH) DO IT campaign gives you the opportunity to claim your rights by participating in the global youth movement. Together with two of our partners we launched the campaign to involve young people in international processes. International agreements have a huge impact on young people’s lives. Therefore we must ensure that our voices are heard. With EUR 5,000 we can further expand the campaign and make a real impact on the international level. Now is the time!
Project four: EUR 5000,- ARI
ARI: Sexuality education in Indonesia
In Indonesia, over 62 million people are aged 10-24 years old. Together they have a massive need for health services and information. They often lack access to this, which leads to destructive results. For example, the HIV epidemic in Indonesia is among the fastest growing in Asia. Our partner ARI works to improve the situation for young people and ensure that young people are listened to in the design of policies and programs. With EUR 5,000 ARI can increase their impact in the vast country.
