Other national advocacy

The Netherlands has a good reputation concerning Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. Dutch youth are relatively good informed about sex, and young people are generally able to freely express their sexuality, no matter what their sexual orientation is.

However, there is always room for improvement! For example, not all schools are required to include comprehensive sexuality education in their curriculum, is it still possible to fire homosexual teachers on the basis of their sexual orientation, and is the access to safe abortion an ever-returning point of discussion. Sometimes, our advocacy activities on a national level are focused on the position of the Netherlands in the world. We partake in discussions on international collaboration, the Dutch stance at international conferences and the Dutch funding of several international organizations.

CHOICE tries to influence Dutch policies in several ways. When CHOICE-related issues are up for discussion in the Dutch Parliament, we try to influence the debate by asking questions to the government, sending letters to politicians, writing articles or supporting protests. In addition, CHOICE is represented in several commissions and client boards, such as the CASA (Center for Contraceptives, Sexuality and Abortion) client board. In Dutch politics as well as these commissions and boards, CHOICE tries to increase attention for sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people.

We furthermore like to get involved in public debates. For example, we organize debates in collaboration with the PANN foundation on themes such as sexuality education and the acceptance of homosexuality in the Netherlands. CHOICE is also often present at festivals and conferences, where CHOICE youth advocates are part of discussions or facilitate workshops.

We undertake most of our national advocacy efforts together with our partners from the SRHR Alliance.
