Meet Aliansi Remaja Independen (ARI)
Aliansi Remaja Independen or the Independent Young People Alliance (but we get to call them ARI!) is a youth-led organization from Indonesia that works on sexual and reproductive rights and health, education and employment. The provincial branches they work in are: West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Java, Central Java, and South Sulawesi.
ARI envisages a society in which young people are empowered, equal, independent, responsible, and able to fulfill their rights and participate actively in every aspect of their life. They aim to work meaningfully with government agencies, civil societies, youth groups and development partners to ensure that all young people reach their optimum health and complete their compulsory education. ARI’s strengths are advocacy and engaging young people meaningfully on issues that concern them. ARI breathes Meaningful Youth Participation (MYP) and has members from 14 to 23 years old!
They advocate at the local, national and international level in the pursuit of equal rights for youth in Indonesia. ARI also aims to celebrate (sexual) diversity of young people through the promotion of the rights of marginalized young people. Members of ARI are, amongst others, young people living with HIV, young sex workers, young men having sex with men, transgender youth, students, activists and young religious leaders.
Partnership with CHOICE
CHOICE and ARI became partners in 2011. Together we work on advocacy skills, internal communication and capacity building strategies. ARI and CHOICE are currently working together within the Get Up Speak Out, Yes I Do and the Right Here Right Now. CHOICE and ARI work together to structurally integrate MYP in their programatic work and to build their capacity to continue the work they are doing.
All young people worldwide should be able to explore, experience and express their sexualities in healthy, pleasurable and safe ways.
