Laura Bas appointed as new Youth Ambassador for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Gender Equality and Bodily Autonomy

“As a young person, I think it's time that sex education isn't just about STIs and pregnancies, but also about the pleasure and the discovery journey that comes with sex. Moreover, I want to break the taboo around period poverty.”

What does a youth ambassador do?

As Youth Ambassador, Laura plays an important role as link between young people and policy makers, with the aim of aligning the work of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs more with the lived realities of a diverse group of young people. The position of Youth Ambassador arose from the shared vision of the Ministry and CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality that young people should be structurally more involved in policy making: young people must be included in the decision making that concerns them: "Nothing about us, without us!" The Youth Ambassador focuses on themes like sexual and reproductive rights, freedom of choice and consent, and gender equality. In addition, she accompanies the Dutch delegation to United Nations conferences, participates in negotiations on UN legislation and visits young people in the Netherlands and abroad. Through the work of the Youth Ambassador young people have an official voice in Dutch international policy making concerning their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

 Comprehensive Sexuality Education and Period Poverty 

Laura's focus for this year is on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and Period Poverty. Comparing to the sex education that is currently provided in the Netherlands, CSE also deals with gender diversity, the pleasurable, social and relational aspects of sex and consent. Not only Dutch young people, but young people worldwide, need sex education that covers more than just the biological aspects of sex. Moreover, CSE leads to better use of contraception and fewer unwanted pregnancies.

Laura is also committed to breaking the stigma around menstruation. “Women should not be ashamed of a biological process that concerns their reproductive system.” In the Netherlands alone, more than 25,000 young girls and women miss education because they can not afford sanitary towels and other menstruation products. Internationally there is also much to be gained: in Uganda for example, 28% of girls do not attend school during their period, and 12% of the Indian population cannot afford menstrual products. In addition, the lack of knowledge about menstrual hygiene often leads to disease.

Laura has been committed to gender equality for a long time. Last year she started her own project for Gender Equality in the labour market. She also came third in Miss World Netherlands, was one of the hundred young women who were admitted to the Young Lady Business Academy of Elske Doets and she is currently following the University Master Culture, Organization and Management. Her motivation comes from her conviction that every (young) person should be able to make informed choices about their life. Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, Gender Equality and Bodily Autonomy are crucial to achieve this.

Laura Bas is de nieuwe Jongerenambassadeur bij Buitenlandse Zaken voor Seksuele en Reproductieve Rechten, Keuzevrijheid en Gendergelijkheid

“Als jongere vind ik dat het tijd is dat seksuele voorlichting niet alleen maar over soa’s en zwangerschappen gaat, maar ook over het plezier en het ontdekken dat bij seks komt kijken. Daarnaast wil ik ook het taboe omtrent menstruatiearmoede doorbreken.“

Wat houdt de functie in?

Als jongerenambassadeur is Laura een belangrijke schakel tussen jongeren en beleidsmakers, met als doel het werk van het Ministerie beter af te stemmen op de realiteit van een diverse groep jongeren. De functie is ontstaan vanuit de gedeelde visie van het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken en CHOICE dat jongeren structureel meer betrokken moeten zijn in beleidsvorming. Jongeren moeten namelijk meegenomen worden in besluitvorming die over hen gaat. ‘Nothing about us without us’.   De jongerenambassadeur richt zich specifiek op de thema’s Seksuele en Reproductieve Rechten, Keuzevrijheid en Gendergelijkheid . Daarnaast zal zij meegaan met de Nederlandse delegatie naar (VN) conferenties, deelnemen aan onderhandelingen over VN-wetgeving en jongeren in binnen-en buitenland opzoeken en met hen in gesprek gaan . Kortom: door het werk van de Jongerenambassadeur hebben jongeren een officiële stem in de ontwikkeling van het internationale beleid van Nederland op het gebied van Seksuele en Reproductieve Rechten, Keuzevrijheid en Gendergelijkheid.

 Comprehensive Sexuality Education en Menstruatiearmoede

De focus van Laura voor dit jaar ligt op Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) en Menstruatiearmoede. In tegenstelling tot de seksuele voorlichting  die op dit moment in Nederland wordt gegeven, behandelt CSE ook genderdiversiteit, de plezierige, sociale en relationele aspecten van seks en het aangeven van wensen en grenzen. Daarnaast wordt er in het onderwijs vaak alleen in de onderbouw aandacht besteed aan seksuele voorlichting, terwijl de bovenbouw en het MBO hier ook om staan te springen. Niet alleen Nederlandse jongeren, maar ook jongeren in het buitenland hebben behoefte aan uitgebreidere seksuele voorlichting. Daarnaast leidt CSE tot beter  gebruik van anticonceptie, minder ongewenste zwangerschappen en gezondere relaties.  Daarnaast zet Laura zich ook in om het stigma omtrent menstruatie te doorbreken. “Vrouwen moeten zich in geen enkele situatie schamen voor een lichamelijk proces.”  Alleen in Nederland al missen ruim 25.000 jonge meisjes en vrouwen delen van hun onderwijs door een gebrek aan geld voor maandverband. Internationaal gezien valt hier ook veel winst te behalen: In Uganda gaat bijvoorbeeld 28% van de meisjes niet naar school tijdens hun ongesteldheid.

Over Laura Bas

Laura zet zich al een langere tijd in voor gendergelijkheid. Zo startte ze afgelopen jaar een eigen project voor meer gendergelijkheid op de arbeidsmarkt, waarbij ze onder andere samenwerkte met Europarlementariërs Vera Tax en Agnes Jongerius. Ook werd ze derde bij Miss World Nederland, was ze afgelopen winter één van de honderd jonge vrouwen die tot de Young Lady Business Academy van Elske Doetswerd toegelaten en volgt ze op dit moment de Master Culture, Organization and Management. Haar motivatie komt voort uit de gedachte dat iedereen goed geïnformeerde keuzes moet kunnen maken over zijn of haar leven. “Seksuele en Reproductieve Gezondheidsrechten, Gendergelijkheid en Keuzevrijheid spelen hier een cruciale rol in. Ik wil er aankomend jaar dan ook alles aan doen om de positie van jongeren hierin te verbeteren.”
