“No matter how modern, creative, or unconventional your idea is, it matters.”

As an initiative designed to empower young people to take up space confidently, Tubonge has fostered meaningful and inclusive youth participation in Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nairobi. Implemented by the Youth Executive Board of the Right Here Right Now program, Tubonge has used art as a tool of awareness by integrating artistic expression into SRHR advocacy.

CHOICE is excited to share the amazing work of Tubonge, an initiative sponsored by CHOICE's Seed Grant project in 2024. A Seed Grant is the funding of a promising project that tackles important topics, such as Youth-Adult Partnerships, Gender Transformative Approaches and youth empowerment. At CHOICE, we are excited to fund small projects that inspire and have long-lasting impact on the communities they serve!

Tubonge has successfully created space for young artists to express their creativity and engage in non-traditional activism to enhance public awareness about SRHR. The introduction of edutainment—games and interactive activities—to make learning more engaging has demonstrated that unconventional forms of activism can boost engagement and help create bigger impacts.

Beyond the positive impact in the field of SRHR, Tubonge na Art's inclusion of a diverse group of young people has provided them the confidence to take up space in a wide range of socio-political discussions. There's much more to come from the initiative! Expansion to reach more youths, collaborating with more partners, and strengthening resource mobilization to ensure a sustained growth are the next steps to be taken.
